The Wildflower Rescue Committee Two things can happen when a patch of trillium or lady slippers sits in the path of a new home site. They can get bulldozed under—or, with the help of alert property owners, they can be transplanted to new sites. Some rescued plants are moved to Conservancy property sites, when appropriate. Others are potted up and sold at the annual Spring Plant Sale at the Leland Village Green to help fund the Conservancy’s mission. Want to help our Wildflower Rescue Committee with some or all of it? All you need is a strong back and a love of the outdoors. To get involved, call Patty Shea, 213-256-9249 or Joanie Woods, 213-256-7154. If you can’t help but know of a site slated for the bulldozer or have property you plan to build on, also contact Patty or Joanie. Like to snowplow? We would appreciate help keeping our parking areas plowed out at Whaleback Natural Area (Leland); and the Chippewa Run Natural Area (Empire) Call Jenee : 231-256-9665 or email: jrowe@theconservancy.com if you can help. A special thanks to our past and current snowplow volunteers: Rick Cross at Kehl Lake Natural Area (Northport); Warren Watkins, Scott Koeze and Craig Miller at Houdek Dunes (between Leland and Northport); and Gene Meeuwenberg at DeYoung Natural Area on Cedar Lake (near Traverse City). Auction Committee Our Annual Picnic and Auction is a critical component of our success. Funds raised at this event support our work all year long. This is a fun committee and a great way to meet new people and get involved. There are many tasks, from gathering items for the auction to helping serve appetizers to helping wiht set up the event. You don’t have to solicit if you don’t want to! Call Carolyn: 231-256-9665 or email cfaught@theconservancy.com. Pictured at right: Display Chair, Christina Pfeufer Mailing Crews Help stuff envelopes or stick labels on newsletters. We need a group nearly every month to help. It’s a sociable group, and Gayle almost always brings a treat to share. Call Gayle: 231-256-9665 or email: gayle@theconservancy.com. Volunteer Stewardship Network These hardworking people are the folks who create and maintain the trails and viewing platforms you’ll enjoy. They are the keepers and caretakers of our Natural Areas and Preserves. We also have a need for tree planters or people willing to help with digging up invasive species and replacing them with native plants. There’s much to do year-round! To get on our list, call Jenee Rowe 231-256-9665 or email: jrowe@theconservancy.com. Pictured: John Scott and Bob Hagerman install a new kiosk at Chippewa Run Natural Area, fall 2004. Docents These are very knowledgeable volunteers who lead hikes and spread our message at our Preserves and Natural Areas. Training is extensive and being a Docent requires a large commitment of time. If you are interested in hearing more about our Docent program or have a special area of expertise within the natural world to share, call Gayle: 231-256-9665 or email: gayle@theconservancy.com. Pictured at right: Docent Alice Van Zoeren Booth Keepers Our booth is a great way for people who are unfamiliar with the Conservancy to get to know us and for us to find new members. Many of our members volunteer to man the booth at summer events. They answer questions, pass out literature and sell Conservancy clothing. If you would like to be a booth volunteer, call Communications Director Carolyn Faught 231-256-9665 or email her at cfaught@theconservancy.com. We will hold a training session in June.
We are also in search of a “Booth Captain,” someone who will take on the responsibility of getting the booth where it has to go, setting it up and tearing it down at seven or eight events throughout the summer. This job often takes in the weekends, requires a large vehicle and a strong person to set it all up. It can be a one-person job, but always goes easier with a partner. This person could take a big load off our staff! If you’re interested, please call or email Carolyn at cfaught@theconservancy.com. Pictured: Bill and Shirley Orcutt at our booth, summer 2004. Call Gayle: 231-256-9665 or email: gayle@theconservancy.com. Brochure Distributors Our brochure helps to spread our message and brings us new members. Help keep it stocked at a variety of locations around the county, from stores to bed and breakfasts to restaurants. If you would like to help, or want brochures for your own place of business or to give to guests and family who are not Conservancy members, Call Carolyn Faught at 231-256-9665 or email: cfaught@theconservancy.com. Pictured right: Marnie Kohler takes care of Suttons Bay and Omena for us! Link Us To Your Website If you have a website, please put a link to our site on yours and help us spread our message. Just link to www.theconservancy.com. Display Our Brochure
If you have a place of business where you deal with the public, please display our brochure. We have a nice acrylic rack we can provide that does not take up much space. The tourists and visitors who come to this area, and love it as much as you do, are hard for us to reach. You can do it for us, and help us gain new members that will help to protect this place we all love. If you are a resort operator, you could put a brochure in every room! |
